31 Day Challenge – Day 24: Inspired by a book

Hello ladies!

It’s a public holiday (Heritage Day) here in South Africa today, so I’ve scheduled this post and I’m probably lying in bed sleeping in 😀

For today’s challenge, I had to create some book-inspired nails, and I was happy to use one of my favourite books ever: Sabriel by Garth Nix. It’s part of a trilogy (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen) which were my absolute favourite books as a teenager and are still among my favourites.

sabrielIn Sabriel, certain characters (including Sabriel herself) are Charter Mages and are able to cast magic using Charter Symbols. The book covers show some of the symbols and that’s what I’ve recreated on my nails.

See? Those are my own copies of the trilogy. The cover of Sabriel is also covered in smaller shiny versions of the symbols against a matte background. I thought of doing a shiny vs matte thing on my nails as well, but I decided it was too difficult to distinguish the symbols that way. I think shiny vs matte nail art works better for more distinct, big shapes than runes and symbols!

sabriel1I started out with a coat of Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear in Black Out. I added a matte top coat and tried using a gloss top coat for the symbols, but when that didn’t work as well as I’d hoped, I added the symbol shapes in Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear in White On using a small nail art brush. On my thumb, middle and ring fingers, I created the fiery orange symbols with Essence Colour & Go – Wanna be your Sunshine, Catrice in Pimp My Shrimp, and Charlie Revlon in Lady in Red and Allure. I used fewer colours for the blue symbols on my pinkie and pointer, using the Tip Top Rikki Brest I luv Denim polishes (it’s a darker and lighter blue polish duo) along with a little more White On.

sabriel3I purposely let the darker colours overlap the white shape of the symbol in an attempt to get the flaming look of the symbols. I think I captured the symbols pretty well and I was very happy with this.

sabriel2If you haven’t heard of these books before, do yourself a favour and look them up. If you enjoy fantasy books filled with magic and which have a strong female protagonist, then you need them in your life RIGHT NOW.

31DC2013I’ve had a lot of fun with the last 4 days, but I’m not so sure about the next few… wish me luck!

Take a look at the other book-inspired nails here:

Gorgeous mani! And omg, the Abhorsen trilogy! It was one of my faaavorites in high school. Just the other day I was trying to convince a friend to read it. Shade’s Children was my other favorite Garth Nix book. Hahaha I might have to bust out the kindle for a re-read now that I’ve seen this!
