Hi everyone!
It’s time for another Digital Dozen week! This time the theme is ‘get to know me’. At first I was a bit stuck on this theme – after all, you already know what my hobby is. I do nail art! What more can I share? After a little thinking, though, I realised that there are plenty of aspects to my life and likes that can translate well to nail art. I decided to start off with something that is somewhat related to my career. Geode nails! In my day job, I’m an Earth Scientist. Right now, I’m a graduate student working towards my PhD. The work I do has absolutely nothing to do with geodes, but they’re pretty and translate to nail art well. A geode forms when a gas bubble in a volcanic rock is later filled with crystal growths as hydrothermal fluids move through the bubble. They can be very beautiful with spectacular crystals. I didn’t try to show the individual crystals on my nails, but rather just the glittering beauty inside the cavity.
I actually got this idea from one of my fellow graduate students (thanks, Morgan!), who wanted some geode nail art done. I thought I’d better practice on myself first and it turned out to be perfect for this week’s theme. To get this look, I started with a base of Polish ‘M Nuttin’ For Christmas. I then painted on layers of China Glaze Tart-y For The Party, Zoya Trixie, Elevation Walk a Little Farther and finally Sinful Colors Black on Black. I waited until they were completely dry and then took a cotton bud dipped in nail polish remover and gently rubbed away the upper layers to let each colour show through. It was a lot of fun and worked surprisingly well! Just be careful not to get too enthusiastic with the remover or you’ll end up with bald spots.
The glitter in Nuttin’ For Christmas made it perfect to represent the crystals inside the geodes!
